Talking About Tiktok...In Class!

This quarter, I took Honors 211C: Situating Publishing in the 21st Century: From Penny Dreadfuls to Booktok. I was super excited to take this class, since I'm a big reader and have been an observer of Booktok since it really picked up back in 2020. I had a super fun time in this class, and I think it's my favorite Honors class I've taken so far. It was super interesting to learn about the way the publishing industry works, read a few books, and talk about social media in an academic setting! About halfway through the quarter, I gave a micro presentation on "Booktok books." This presentation was really interesting for me to do, because it allowed me to delve into ideas I'd had for a while about which kinds of books are boosted on Booktok, and if they're worthy of the praise they receive. Here is that presentation:



For my final project, I took one of the books I read for class, The Resurrectionist, and remade its covers in several different genres. The point of this assignment was to demonstrate how flexible genre is, and how a single book can be marketed in numerous different ways. This was a super fun project to do, and it was really nice to do something creative, compared to the rest of my classes which are not creative at all. Here is my project:
